The biggest hit of the Cockatoo Island Underbelly Arts Festival, Game On by Michaela Davies will be exhibited at the Damien Minton Gallery in Redfern this November.
The work is a performance installation that uses Electronic Muscle Stimulation (EMS) to control real people as game characters. Davie’s work explores violence in modern entertainment and the ethical challenges faced by society, as technology advances to a point where the ‘realism’ in games is indistinguishable from reality.
Game On references the 1960s Milgram experiments on obedience and questions both the motivations of the players and the culpability of the boxers who have relinquished control of their limbs.
